Victim Court Support Caseworker

Victim Services and Crime Prevention Division advises the BC Government and communities around the province on issues that matter to victims of crime. The Division ensures the needs of victims of crime are considered in the development and implementation of legislation, policies, procedures, and operations throughout the criminal justice system. The mandate is to ensure that the needs of a victim of crime are acknowledged and served throughout the criminal justice process, and that a victim of crime receives emotional support and practical assistance to recover from the impact of this crime.
Our branch ensures that the needs of victims of crime are integrated into the criminal justice system - whether by legislation that addresses their rights, or by providing programs and services to help support victims of crime and their families.
In the role of Victim Court Support Caseworker, you'll assist victims/witnesses of crime and their families in cases of particularly serious/violent criminal offences involving children or other vulnerable people throughout the criminal justice system. You will provide emotional support, safety planning, referrals, information, court orientation and accompaniment. Working with considerable independence, you'll call up on your strong assessment skills to identify the most appropriate and effective ways to provide direct assistance and facilitate referrals to a range of other support programs and services to best meet the needs of the victim.
With excellent communication skills, strong knowledge of the criminal justice system and the dynamics of victimization, coping strategies and recovery models, you'll be well-equipped to use your compassion, tact, diplomacy and problem-solving skills to assist victims/witnesses and their families. Preferably, you have experience in providing support to victims, witnesses and their families throughout the court process; working with Crown counsel; and collaborating with government and community agencies to in responding to victims' issues.
The successful candidate will have a thorough knowledge of the criminal justice system, and existing resources for victims of crime. Also, the candidate must have the ability to work independently and have excellent interpersonal/communication skills. The successful applicant may be required to work at other court locations in the lower mainland as needed.

Qualifications:
To be considered for this position your resume must clearly demonstrate that you have the following:
A University Degree in Social Sciences (i.e. Criminology, Psychology, Social Work) and a minimum of two years providing direct services to victims of crime and/or vulnerable people, or Equivalent:
- Diploma or Certificate in Social Sciences (as above) plus four years experience providing direct services to victims of crime and/or vulnerable people; or
- High School Diploma and six years experience providing direct services to victims of crime and/or vulnerable people.
AND
Experience working with justice system personnel (Crown Counsel, police, probation), and social service or health organizations.
Experience in a leadership role collaborating and coordinating with government and/or other organizations to develop, implement and support initiatives that affect victims of crime and/or vulnerable people.
