The College of Opticians of Ontario (COO) is dedicated to serving and protecting the public interest through effective planning, guidance and regulation of the practice of opticianry. It achieves this through standards of practice, quality assurance programs, and professional self-regulation. COO discharges its responsibilities under the Opticianry Act and is mandated by the Regulated Health Professions Act.
The College invites applications for the position of Registrar. The position requires professionalism and people skills. The Registrar must engage stakeholders patiently and effectively through consultation and diplomacy, while respecting the College’s role in serving the public. The Registrar is responsible for the operation of the College and must possess exceptional knowledge of regulation, skills in communication (writing, presenting, etc.), human resources/team management, and board governance, complemented by depth in finance, planning, policy and government relations.
Candidates will bring a senior management background in a similar setting such as regulated health/RHPA College, or management of a health care organization where significant knowledge of regulation is necessary. Knowledge of the role of opticians in the health care system is important. Preference will be given to individuals who have successfully worked with elected and appointed boards to excel in governance practices.
Experience in regulatory policy development, implementation, and interpretation, and stakeholder engagement and communications, are key success factors.
Applicants will also have post-secondary preparation in a relevant discipline such as organization management, law or health administration.
The Registrar is the chief staff executive reporting to a 15 member Council comprising public members and opticians. The Registrar heads a professional team of twelve employees and must bring experience organizing work and motivating teams in a high paced, demanding environment.
